Du klingst als hättest Du eine Klobürste in Deinem Arsch! "You sound as if you have a toilet brush in your arse!"

Who hasn't heard  of American Idol? Well, the above statement is from the German version of it, known as Deutschland Sucht Den Superstar.  Or in English; Germany searches for a superstar. The show's panel of judges stars as its Simon Cowell the very-mean and-cold-"  Dieter Bohlen. Anyone recall or ever heard of him? He was in a band called Modern Talking in the 80's and their most popular song is You're My Heart - watch here -remember it?

I admit, I find  most of his comments funny and I laugh at the poor kids but most leave the show crying and end up traumatised. Asked if he doesn't care about the damage some of his hurting even brutalising comments could cause; he answered that someone had to tell those kids the truth, because their parents and friends tell them only what they'd like to hear.

I noticed the lesser talented or zero-talented at all are the most confident. What I  also noticed is the resemblance of the characters of the candidates of the German verus the American one ( watch videos in links) Deutschland Sucht Den Superstar (DSDS) is the most popular show right now and partly or mostly because  of those who make fools of themselves. Why do human beings find joy and amusement in other's misery?

There are those who truly deserve to be laughed at, like this one because really; what in God's name are they thinking? But these poor people did not deserve to be laughed at (different show) for operations gone bad! We love to be entertained but at what cost? Take the Gladiators for instance; people enjoyed watching them kill each other. In the Middle Ages, hanging, stoning  etc was a very popular kind of entertainment watched even by kids! I grew up with no TV in Kisumu until 1982.  During that time, my (our) only "entertainment" was when people died or got hit by cars. We were always the first at such scenes.(my brothers, my sister and friends).

I am not sure what was so interesting but then, it was more than interesting. I have never forgotten any of the scenes but two of them are so present in my head as though they occurred yesterday. We were playing kati  or mpira  (dodge-ball)  outside our compound that was very close to the main road - we had no fence - when a pick-up drove by fast hooting non-stop. - my brother ran to see what was wrong and suddenly screamed saying the car had hit a woman. What do we do? We run to the scene! The car had hit her, turned upside down and lay on her. It had also hit a wall. ( another woman came running out of the whole on her wall wearing a petticoat screaming and went to get the police...she looked liked she'd lost it!).  Good Samaritans pushed the car off the woman bringing it upright. She was still alive and her limbs were moving slightly in slow motion. Some adults said " don't look at her, ochieni " (she's cursing you).

The other incident is less dramatic. I was on my way to visit a friend who was admitted at I think Lumumba Hospital? Am not sure. Anyway, on the way to his ward I had to pass the mortuary and believe it or not, the door was wide open! So I walked into it and looked inside. I stood there for at least half an hour looking at dead bodies in something that looked like shelves. The one I remember most was one of a young man who wore only red sports shorts with white stripes at the sides. He had dried-up blood all over his body and he had a head injury too. He must have died in a car accident. He's body looked swollen too-RIP.

I was six years old  and I still have nightmares when I think of him. But believe it or not, I still ran to such scenes even though I could not sleep for ages. What am trying to say is; would we be killing each other for pleasure if we didn't have the kind of entertainment we have today? Are we just ticking bombs waiting to detonate?

We have PlayStations that have replaced the gladiator shows with the same brutality only it is done in cyberspace!? Some experts blame school killings/shootings on such PlayStations. Is it in our genes to want such entertainment so badly that we find joy and amusement in places and situations that they shouldn't be? Look at shows where people are asked to eat worms or cockroaches for $20....what is so entertaining about that?

But such shows are made because the majority want to watch them! As for DSDS/American Idol; it is very entertaining but I think the judges are a little too harsh!

Great style! This is by far one of the best articles I have read in a long time!! You are a great story-teller!!

I am just wondering, how big was this mortuary, or alternatively how deeply were you studying the bodies?

TV\'s deadly sins

That was a very interesting piece. I enjoyed the way in which you have introduced the topic of the "american/german idol" talent(?) show and then turned it around beautifully to shine the spotlight on us: the viewer....the audience....the bystander.....the passerby.......your writing is beautiful.

I guess it is safe to say that from a sociological standpoint many common aspects of the human condition come into sharp focus when they are exhibited in the little cocoon of a TV "talent" show. Fear and Greed, Jealousy and Anger show themselves in every episode because it is the human condition. I guess one could call the advent of this kind of entertainment as the New Enlightenment and the Age of Dumbing Down where TV stations believe that the public is so overworked that they cannot partake in any leisure activity (reading, writing, theatre, drama...etc) requiring the continual use of a brain. These humiliating shows are presented as an antidote to sportophobic couch potatos. They reveal the inner workings of the millennium mind.

First we have the contestants....similar in some ways to Ms Wangui's gladiators but so clearly suffering from a new millennium mental condition. Those afflicted by this disorder nearly always believe that they have a right to a record deal today and fame and riches tomorrow. Pointing to winners of previous shows they cry , " All we need is a chance and the votes of the viewers." The viewers laugh because nobody asked the hopeless talentlesses to go up and make fools of themselves.

Waiting hugrily in the Den we have the judges, panelists or whatever. They whose words are law. With a simple Yes or No they seal the fates of thousands of hopefuls and I guess one could say that any temptation that they may have to play a little god is only human. The Simon Cowells of this world use the enormous powers that they wield to tease and mock; to torment, bully and humiliate. Here we have a cat that catches a mouse. It plays with it by letting it run and catching it over and over. The mouse will die once it ceases to be an amusement to the cat.

The third participant in this great folly is the general public, the audience and the excuse. Big Brother producers explained that they had a duty to the viewers to air their program. Newspapers publish stuff because "the public's right to know" So when we watch as Cowell & co tighten the screws on some hopeless wannabe what does that say about us? When we spend good money to vote for our favourite are we projecting ourselves onto the favourite star in the hope that we may feel better about our non exciting, boring and humble lives.Do we feel happy when others fail because we can say....at least I'm better than that poor sod? What do you think? All I know is that even if my favourite wins....he/she will never know that I, mimi Danny the humble pizza delivery boy used my hard earned kwacha and voted for him to go forth into a life that I can only dream about......Krazy or what?

My last few words Ms Wangui are passed in the spirit of friendship. Please don not get me wrong. You need counselling. Talk to someone about some of those things that you mentioned. Your General Doctor is a good place to start.

Is Ms Wangui a doctor
written by emmo opoti , February 01, 2007
Or a Med Student? Thirty minutes!!! Really? There's a website called click here that supplies the kind of feed you speak of in the second part of your article.

I am also from Kisumu, and while I haven't your morbid fascination with blood, I have seen similar scenes of this what Tim calls 'rubbernecking'! Si many victims from the 1998 bomb-blast ya Nairobi were rushing to see the drama when the second blast hit them?

Great comment Dan, have not see you in a long while. How goes it?

P.S Lucy I remember that song!! I have not heard it in a very long time!

@Emmo, enjoy the song. I actually love(d) it!

@Tim Norwood, thank you.....

As for the Article Dan, I just got tired of people blaming *the others* for the shows and tried to show the other side.

I ted to concur wih your article and i appreciate how you have brought out that bit of life.By the wayto say the truth there is a way a misfortune tends to arouse people.Thats why you rush to an accident scene to bear witness and not to get what has happened instead of getting it from a third party.Ebu take for example the links where old pals meet e.g grads.com.There is this buddy you mee there and he/she will be like ;So who do you see ama tell me about people back home or about old boys and gals. How do we answer? " by the way Mr. so and so died.mrs so and so was demoted, nanii got married to a drunakrd ho beats her everday.Yani those are the juicy stories. The rest are said in just one statement.nanii went to stato, nanii graduated etc.Basically the queer and awkard things just seem to arouse people in life.Thats why they will eat worms in realit shows,go to survivor God knows where and all those funny shows. Yani that is the life people want out of the normal life we are leading which looks more programmed from i dont know where

A good read.

I think Simon Cowell is right. Americans need some truth, someone to tell as it is! But the beauty of this country is using what u have...most kids go to the show for exposure, put their stuff and face out there. It is not only record labels checking them out. Choreographers, modelling agencies, those other reality shows...it is a marketing thing...look at K-Fedex, ex-Britney...he caint rap a thing but ads are rolling in..now he will be on a superbowl ad! It is America, exploit every opportunity. I doubt that the contestants see it as we see it here.
How come William Hung 'The boy who misrepresented Ricky Martin' became famous for being a reject. He made his millions. INFACT HE WAS ON lARRY kING SHOW THE OTHER DAY...Famous rejects. D'u think Simon put him down? I dont think so!

For Americans its money, period. This other things...are second.
If you dont beleive this, watch ridiculous shows like 'Flavor Flav'- the brother is illiterate...but the gals who show up? They really dont care for him, just putting their faces out their. Model agencies are watching, Trump is looking for a 4th wife..hallo?.
Then there is 'I love New York',si utashangaa. It is America...the greens matter!

Money, Power, Respect...in that order. Where else in the world can u tranform from a felon (Akon, my favourite senegalese singer) to a millionare and society accepts you?
I dont know about Germany, but in Britain it is impossible to jump social classes!

As for human cahracter, nothing has changed, same'ol same'ol different times.
In marketing it goes like this: A customer will tell 20 more people about a bad product, but only one person for a good one. I think all of us are guilty here! See how paparrazo make money out of the misery of celebs!

American Idol
written by duncanmu , February 06, 2007
Great read Lucy! (What a smile.....!)
I see your good point of view but you also need to see the flipside. One time there was a dude named Michael Hung who could not sing. He literally made a fool of himself with a song called "She Bangs." Simon told him the truth; he was in the wrong place. What happened next? He became a celebrity overnight! Many folks think they can duplicate that and that's why you see them trying really hard to appear silly and idiotic. Theirs is a gamble with the American audience who proved unpredictable as the case of Hung illustrated. You can get verbal abuses from Simon and end up a celebrity!

The American shows are marketting tools.

Flavor Flav may be disgusting, so is 'I love New York'...but once those gals leave that show, they will be getting very many calls from modelling agencies, marketers, music gurus...that is the deal! Who in their right mind wud want a man like Flav...

Who remembers Kwameh and Omarrossa (The apprentice)? Ist or second show?

Kwameh was the colored prince slotted to win, and Omarossa-Cruella de vil, determined to spoil.
People (blacks) cursed Omarossa, but guess what? she went on to win endorsements for other projects, and Trump called her back on the show!

A merica is a young culture...and it is great being part of it. No one gets put down. Am sure if Simon was that nasty in Britain he'd get shot...here he makes millions. Check his other shows: American Inventor and 'America got Talent'.

I think once one moves here from another part of the world, it is great if they just go with the flow. Total 'bit.ching' here is called 'personality'...if u can not be loud and 'bit.chy' America is not for you.

Brains dont matter, just get at what u are doing and do it...am sure of that in the entertainment world at least, or leadership.
