Is Twenty-Twenty sexier? PDF Print E-mail

Many of us will no doubt have enjoyed watching the Twenty/Twenty Cricket series currently being staged in South Africa.

A new addition to the cricket calendar, this form of the game is a new addition and since its inception has not been taken seriously as the Test series or the One Day form of the game. Keen followers of the ‘Gentleman's Game' have dismissed it as a too brief, uncertain and even amateurish. The African teams participating have come into this competition with a completely different attitude; many have spotted the opportunity to popularize the game in their soccer crazy backyards.

There have been a few good stories, Zimbabwe stunned Australia with a Five wicket thrashing, Zim are one of the whipping boys awarded Test status with Bangladesh and they have not cemented their place as a Test playing country. If they went about their test matches as they did this week, they will confound many critics and despite their loss to England and eventual exit from the series, they did many proud. Kenya was easily kicked out with an embarrassing loss to first New Zealand and then Sri Lanka, we have surely seen better performance from Tikolo and the boys and it is hoped they will improve and play with flair that Kenyans have been known for in the Cricket World Cup.

But for Africa, when all else fails, you can always count on South Africa to come up with the goods. There is no telling how far they will get this time, they terribly disappointed many with the early exit in the last world cup which they hosted. What is commendable though, is the level of organization this time round, most stadia are full and the teams will be enjoying the highly orchestrated cheerleading, indeed, this is a first for cricket and for the first time, cricket even looks sexy. Long live Twenty20.

For lovers of the game who do not think of small insects when cricket is mentioned the twent-twenty format is said to be more entertaining than the one day. The pace is faster.

Talking of South Africa, did you see their humiliation of England in the rugby world cup?

Anon:
Thank you for your advice on what words I should have used, but no thanks, it was not 'words misplaced'. For those who follow the game and particularly the current series, and bothered to check the context in which the term was used (the sexy cheerleaders), they will have understood what I was talking about. But I don't expect this of one on anonymous podium knit picking for grammatical errors.... you might want to edit my response to you now.

It is nice to see African teams doing well, whether in cricket or Rugby. South Africa has alot of potential if they can work out their selection issues.
I think the appeal in Twenty20 form of cricket lies in the fact that like most other games, you do not have to take the whole day off work to watch it.

Marangu,

I agree perhaps the most exciting of the 3 modes of cricket. Limited overs may have started looking boring for them to introduce power play sessions in the middle of the game whilst 20/20 appears to be power play all through! I watched the West Indies Vs South Africa game and the batting by Chris Gayle was the most phenomenon batting I have seen since the days of Dean Jones of Australia!!!

For the purists, 20/20 is not an acceptable form of cricket with Australia going in with sleeveless shirts...what cheek for game played in white and a marron ball!!!

Well, 20/20 is here and even in India where they now have a rebel league, it will come to pass as the best passtime for the indians!
