The President today told a Food and Agricultural Organisation at the United Nations, Nairobi, that an urgent solution had to be found for the global food crisis. Capital FM reports that the president cited under-utilisation of water sources for irrigation as a reason for sub-optimal food output.
The station also reports that the president pointed out to the conference (no evidence of appreciation of this in the budget though) that the hefty food importation bill starved developing economies of resources that would be crucial to the development of their infrastructures and industrial potentials.
Agriculture Minister William Ruto decried barriers to trade, especially tarrifs against produce from the developing world. He also lamented under-investment by NGOs and donor agencies in African agriculture.
