A fire has broken out at Nakumatt Downtown, one of Kenya's largest retailer's city center stores. The smoke from the flames is so thick and widespread it has choked occupants of buildings many streets away out of their offices.

The Police Commissioner, the Minister for Internal Security George Saitoti and the Nairobi Provincial Commissioner is on the scene, with several of his officers milling the streets and a force helicopter flying above.

Media services report that the cause of the fire which has spread to nearby buildings, remains unknown. Six people are reported to have been rushed to hospital with injuries. Witness reports on the ground say that the Nakumatt building is still on fire as the fire brigade runs out of fire.

Residents of adjacent buildings allege a power surge just before the fire broke out.

Kahenya, who works in the next building next door, is on the ground with minute-minute updates on the fire here .
