Morgan Tsvangirai Speech (on powersharing) PDF Print E-mail

I would like to thank the people of Zimbabwe for adhering to the principles of peaceful, democratic development. We had two options: To put aside our differences … or to plunge our country into the abyss of a failed state.
I have signed this agreement because my belief in Zimbabwe and its people runs deeper than the scars I bear from these struggles.

The agreement we signed today is the product of painful compromise. It does not provide an instant cure. The road ahead will be long. Patience is a virture.

Hope alone will not deliver a new Zimbabwe.

This new, inclusive government will introduce a new way of governing. As Prime Minister designate, I call on all supporters for Zanu PF and MDC to unite as Zimbabweans. Divisions, polarisation and hatred belong to the past.

Party divisions no longer matter to the people of Zimbabwe.

The hand with which I signed this agreement is the hand which I extend to President Mugabe.

Safety must be restored to our community, our state institutions must serve the people. Our lives begin now. Let us not be divided by our past, but be united by hope for the future."

Morgan Tsvangirai

Tsvangirai seems to have learnt something from his murderous messianical mentor.

That struggle began in earnest eight years ago as the government seized white-owned farms in the name of righting a historical wrong. The process was so corrupt and botched that agriculture has collapsed as a result.

But on this issue, Tsvangirai now agrees with Mugabe. The land will never go back to the white farmers.

"Don't underestimate the political and economic consequences of land but we want to solve this once and for all so that never again should land be used as a political tool," he said.

"We don't have any intention of going back to pre-2000."

Isn't the genesis of the MDC rooted in the general opposition to Mugabe's land policy (not it's corruption as the Guardian would have it) - hence Britain & US support for Tsvangirai?

Having inspired an economic meltdown by way of courting Western sanctions on Zimbabwe, Tsvangirai now seeks to play the role of mess cleaner.
