Major-General Mohammed Hussein Ali, Police Commissioner since 2004, has been relieved of his duties and appointed to head the Postal Corporation of Kenya. (KBC, Reuters, Daily Nation). The new Commissioner of Police is Matthew Iteere, the immediate former Commandant of the General Service Unit.
This comes in the wake of two developments, one more recent. The less-recent is the the visit of Professor Philip Alston, UN Special
Rapporteur on extrajudicial violence, to the country. After it, he issued two reports, a preliminary and a final one, both of which were severely critical of the Government, and Major-General Ali in particular.
There's also the recent reappointment of Justice (Rtd) Aaron Ringeera to his directorship of the Kenya Anti Corruption Authority, which has caused such a furore. The cynical might well think that the timing of Ali's departure is intended to divert attention from Ringeera's reappointment.
