Kimemia Maina in this poem celebrates the beauty of learning.

We weren't taught that
I swear I didn't know

Richard Wright...

A black man!

When we were kids ...in school
They gave us....english teacher
They gave us Enyd Blyton
They gave us C.S Lewis
They gave us Roald Dahl

And Richard Wright
It was all good
Good English literature
No real distinctions Then I got to college
Learning ....things
And reading

Then I learned Richard Wright
Was a black man!!

I have to say Richard Wright is one of my favorite authors! Have you read Black Boy? Ahh, the para where the cook spits into the "Massa's" food sticks out. Well, and then there is the rest of the book-- a great autobiography. I must read it again.
