ECK finally announced Mwai Kibaki as the next president of Kenya. The Kenyan government has banned all media houses from reporting live broadcasts in attempt to stop incitment to violence.
Following the recount of votes in Kajiado North, George Saitoti, Minister for Education, has emerged the winner in that constituency. [updated Nairobi time: 10:21] Mbooni member of parliament elect, Kilonzo Mutula ODM-K, has expressed his disapointment in fellow mp elect James Orengo's (ODM) reaction last night. He was referring to Orengo's outburst complaining about election irregularities. He has also asked Kenyans to follow the rule of law and maintain peace across the country. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ [updated Nairobi time: 11:30] ODM-K presidential candidate Kalonzo Musyoka has called onto Kenyans to maintain peace during this time of uncertainty and anxiety. Kalonzo also said that his party will accept whatever decision that the Kenyan people make. Clips show a ghost town. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [updated Nairobi time: 13:51] Raila has also asked that the entire presidential vote count is repeated nationwide. He also says that he does not trust the ECK audit conducted last night, and urged ECK to display everything to the whole country via the media. Transparency, Raila says, will ensure that Kenya does not end up in chaos. He accused ECK of being influenced by the Kibaki government. Kibaki's government has lost legitimacy, shown by the parliamentary votes, Raila says. He asks Kibaki to be a gentleman and concede defeat. Yesterday Kibaki had declared himself the winner of the presidential race. In response to this, he said he would accept defeat, however, Kenyans would not allow for a rigged election. Raila also says that there are about 48 constituencies, Juja, Nithi, Maragua, Kiambaa, and Gatanga, which are Kibaki strongholds, and Kisii among others, with anomalies. He says that party agents have reported that there were no problems at the constituency level where there was agreement in the number of votes reported. He went on to say that rigging has been at KICC. Raila urged Kenyans to rise above ethnic division. He urged to accept defeat if their candidate lost. The fate of Kenya lies on the government of Kibaki and ECK. "It is unfortunate that the military has to be used. Kenya is not in a state of emergency, we do not need the military." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [updated Nairobi time: 14:23] Press Conference By ODM Pentagon Ruto addresses the press in reaction to last night's agreement with ECK. He says that there has been no documentation for a number of constituitions (48) to establish that the computer generated reports are real numbers Ruto goes on to demonstrate that the constituency numbers (on the 16a form) are different from those reported by ECK. "We are asking the commission, unless there is documentation, there cannot be a difference btwn the figures announced at the tallying stations and those announced by ECK. Everything must be backed for votes to be considered valid." Juja-- total votes 85,000 for parliamentary votes, however, there are 100,000 votes for the presidential. Ruto says, "it is difficult to believe that 15,000 people walked away without voting for their member of parliament." ODM presidential numbers: Raila 4,215,437, Kibaki 3,748,261 ---------------------------------------------------------- [updated Nairobi time: 14:23] At PNU's conference, Musikari Kombo has asked the opposition to stop initimidating the ECK and called on Kenyans to accept the results. Their behavior is disrespectful to ECK. ECK is operating under rules agreed by everyone in parliament. Kiunjiri: "Only 19 constituencies are pending, why is ODM fearing these results? They fear that they have lost the election. Let Kenyans decide with ECK's announcement. Stop inciting the public by giving them half truths. Ruto, unfortunate that he is lying. This is a show of panic. They are sitting here, while the real issues affect the poor Kenyans on the streets. If violence was to break out, they can easily get flights out of here." Kibwana asked ODM to take it to court. Wetangula urged Kenyans to be calm. He said that PNU would follow the proper channels and go to court if they were contesting anything and mentioned Cheplaungu. He also spoke about ODM harassing PNU. The PNU leaders were speaking in response to the press conference by Ruto where he announced that there are several constituencies that have had rigged elections. They urged ODM to take these matters to court, and allow the ECK to announce the results since that is the ECK's duty. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [updated Nairobi time: 15:35] Wangari Maathai is calling for a recount of all presidential votes to remove all doubt. "There is indication that there was fraud. It is the only fair thing to do so that the loser does not feel that they lost unfairly, or the winner feels that they won fairly." He begins by saying that he has received the results of four constituencies: Molo, Turkana Central, Kajiado North... . As he reads the results, there is lot of noise from the audience (the camera moves to the ODM section.) He is asked to repeat the Molo results: Kibaki: 75,261 Raila: 23,268 Kalonzo: 222 Someone is heard from the audience: "The returning officer, Mr.x (cannot make out name) is here, and he has different results. As I write this security is brought in and and someone or people are being kicked out. It is quite chaotic in there. [updated Nairobi time: 16:30] Eventually, Kivuitu and the rest of the commissioners walk out amid tight security. It looks like he has gone into another room where he will continue the meeting. [updated Nairobi time: 16:48] Raila addresses the nation and international community. The people of Kenya have spoken. Do not cheat Kenyans. The figures that the commission has given are fraudulent. Ruto; It is important for all to realise that we are not joking. We made a statement about doctored results. Here is a document signed by the returning officer, who is in the room and is willing to testify. He alleges that documents have been doctored. He also alleges that there are other officers who have left. On whether the chair of ECK was aware of these anomalies, he said he has no knowlede of what Kivuitu knows. He mentioned Moyale as one of the places he was in charge of. Raila: "There is rigging adding 300,000 votes to Kibaki's votes. We have documentation." He says that while he respects President Kibaki, he is afraid that Kibaki is surrounded by bad people. On the morning of the 27th, he found out that ballot papers were being stuffed and raised it with the returning officers. Cardinal Njue: calls on peace and asks Kenyans not to lose hope. The Catholic Bishops wrote a letter pre-election to Kenyans asking them not to be drawn into violence. He especially appealed to the youth (he keeps referering to the violence in Kisumu) to refrain from violence and looting. -------------------------------------------------------- [updated Nairobi time: 17:18] Cotu Secretary General Atwoli has called onto ECK to announce fair results. He is impressed by the voter turnout and the message that Kenyans have given to their mps: that they need appropriate representation. Sakuda has refused to sign off but it seems a done deal. All hotel lodgings in the more peaceful and calm border town of Namanga and the smaller townships around the Nairobi Namanga road are jammed with families running away from the melee in Nairobi.
