It has been a long night at Chamber at the main Parliament Buildings as Speaker and Deputy Speaker elections have been going on since 2pm.[LAST UPDATE: Time in Kenya: Jan 16th, 1:14 am]

(scroll down for latest)

New Speaker of Kenya's National Assembly, Kenneth Marende , officiates over the swearing in of members of parliament.

Mp James Orengo questions pledging allegiance to President Kibaki since "he was fraudently declared winner of the election."

Mp Martha Karua said that the Speaker pledged to uphold all Kenyan instituitions, and the presidency should be acknowledged.

Mp Kilonzo Mutula argued that since members of parliament were not sworn in they could not debate matters of election as they had no jurisdiction.

Mp Otieno Kajwang then said that they should not participate in a "defective oath".

Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka argued that if a new oath was taken, then it would make the Speaker's swearing in invalid.

Speaker Marende then said that "we are not really pledging allegiance to anyone, but to the instituition of the presidency."

 Swearing in is in progress.

                       -------------------------------------------------------------------

A little interruption as Mp Orengo neglects to mention his allegiance to the president. However, voting goes on as the Speaker directs him to follow his standing order.

                                    -------------------------------------------------------------

All 207 members of parliament have now been sworn in.

I never imagined being able to follow proceedings from this website especially on such an important day.

Lets hope all the friction in Kenya can now be left to the dis-honorable members of parliament who get Ksh850k per month for it.

Good work Kiddi.

Thanks for the good work. Let politics be the work of politicians now. ODM have got the majority in parliament they don't need street demo's. They are quite capable of bringing in any 'changes' they consider necessary including constitutional amendments. Enough of the rhetoric, heightening of emotions etc kazi iendelee/ianzee please.

It is high time the country of Kenya lay in the hands of the peoples elected MPs. I am quite happy and thrilled by the unity in the ODM. We could not in truth have expected anything less from our MPS, and now the thieves can see the changes we are after..... as PNU and other like minds want to take us for a ride.

We say:
-Reduce MPs salaries to that of a skilled worker
-No privileges for sitting MPs. Privileges widens the gap between the rich and the poor while it also corrupts!
-Establish a minimum living wage commensurate with the current rate of inflation for all workers in Kenya.
-Stop using taxpayers

Erastus, first and foremost, before we can reduce MPs salary, we must socialize Kenyans that MPs are not cash cows whose job is to finance development projects and constituents financial needs but to represent them in parliament.
Has it ever occured to you how many people the MPs have to share their salaries with yet the likes of the ECK commissioners and other top government and company officials earn similar amounts and more but only share with their immediate families.
Honestly, Kenyans are partly to blame for cultivating this culture of perceived greed amongst MPs.

The issue of in security is rampant in some parts of the country especially Mt Elgon where our people have been killed 15 yesterday night, women have been raped, while the MPS enjoy security 24hrs on the clock and the common mwananchi is not proted with the police who are paid our taxes have been gurding Uhuru park for the last 2months while our people die and have run away to Uganda.

The IDP issue should be addressed and handle as quickly as possible.

We have no opposition in the 10th Parliament we demand that the press became active and broadcast live transmision as the session takes place in parliament and they will also act as watchdogs for that case we hope this will be taken seriously in to account.

Their salaries should be skimmed down they are are only forcassing on issues and laws to accomodate the Prime minister and forgetting major issues like security.

My brother, you are at the opposition. If we do not do it here, no one else will. Welcome to the thinking house and we hope you enjoy it here.
