Sunday, 30 December 2007

With the delay in the announcement of election results, and the subsequent allegations of rigging sweeping the country, there have been outbreaks of violence and looting across the country.

Published here is a video from Nation Television on what happened in Kisumu earlier today. Have you any videos or reports to share?

how sad
written by Annette Keino , December 30, 2007
A friend in Kisumu told me the streets were full of GSU, same thing in Mombasa, trucks and trucks.
I hope we can resolve this in a short time, have another election in the next two months perhaps. Do the MPs want this at all? It remains to be seen.

cry the beloved country
written by Natasha , December 30, 2007
Reuters reports
The few supermarkets and food shops that opened were packed with nervous customers. Shelves of meat, milk, beer, bottled water and other provisions emptied fast.

Business leaders said this weekend's tribal clashes were costing more than $30 million a day in lost taxes -- not to mention looting damage -- and threatened investment in Kenya.

LOOK UP TO GOD
written by Leo , December 30, 2007
With all that is going on I have just one comment to make. Remember that we all have relatives married into different communities in Kenya and so we should remember that when we fight we are destroying ourselves. Please people remember, Kenyans have prayed and God has let this come through. His will be done and we can only humble ourselves in the face of what we are seeing. If this thing was genuine then God has put HIS stamp on itand no matter how much we fight or scream it will come to naught. If however it is not, God has been known to intervene even at the 11th hour so let us leave it all to HIM and look to HIM. God help Kenya.

Kibera is on Fire
written by Silaha , December 30, 2007
Word from Nairobi

Kibera is burning. People who live there are running away from their homes and its all over the press. There are no cars on Ngong Road and CBD is a no go zone tonight. There is no curfew, but the police are all over so people would rather be at home. The Kenyatta market area is not so good.

Raila & Pentagon Arrested
written by Silaha , December 30, 2007
Raila & Pentagon Arrested and taken to different police stations in Nairobi.

ODM militants have said that anyone seen going to work on January 2 will be killed. They are calling for civil unrest and asking people to stay at home.

This is a tough time for us.

Kibaki Steals Elections
written by a guest , December 31, 2007
Idi Amin used to justify his violations of and suspensions of civil rights and use of heavy-handed repression by stating that he was taking those positions to maintain "law and order."

Kenyans, you have just entered into a zone that Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Ivory Coast have been through. Why? Because of the greed of a group of a few dozens or so people including Kibaki, Waweru, Michuki, Muhoho, Murage, et al.

Good luck Kenya!

Next steps?
written by willpress , December 31, 2007
Clearly if anyone thought peace would be restored once the ECK declared results must now know the truth...The Kenyan of today does not just let important matters slip.True, by law the ECK's declarations are assumed to binding. But i think the law falls short of providing for situations where the entire public notices a huge flaw in the process and the ECK goes ahead to declare final results without an open redress. Thus,if such a situation is beyond the scope of the law we have in place, why should we seek a solution within the law?And again, if the current president succumbs to pressure and there is some form of review of the vote tallies i highly doubt if ths can be done credibly because Kivuitu and his people will want to keep their dignity and egos in place and may ensure (even illegally) that the results remains as announced.Resultantly what we are facing here is a pure stalemate that can only be blamed on Kivuitu's declaration at 17:48.38 yesterday without proving to Kenyans within reasonable doubt that the results he read out were true and accurate.

What\'s the real problem here?
written by Kay , December 31, 2007
Do you know what the real problem is, unemployment, poverty and idleness of the youth. Let the government adress this first and see what progress will take place. It is obvious that the looting was not because Raila lost but because they saw an opportunity to do so....

Food is rapidly running out especially in Kiosks and butcheries where the poor shop and which have been looted and burnt here in Mombasa. The harsh realities of everyday survival are quickly sapping the protestors resolve. Even Nakumatt has closed and many shoppers were unable to buy food stocks as they had planned. ATMs are empty. No cell phone credit. Banks are closed. People have run out of money. Soon all this frustration will slowly turn to anger against the direct instigators such as Raila and Ruto. Raila has now called for an ODM rally on January 3rd, 2008, ostensibly to keep up the pressure on Kibaki. I suspect, however, that many people especially in the middle class and which includes ODM supporters, are now getting tired of all the pointless violence. Raila and Ruto will get nowhere in their now obvious attempt to project themselves as the peoples heroes and martyrs.

I do not see how Raila and Ruto are responsible for this state of situation especially as the former called ODM supporters to calm down. The main culprit is farting in state house.

Nobody will ever steal the freedom of the wananchi and get away with it. Apparently Kenya has become all of a sudden a destination like Somalia. French travellers to Kenya are said to have cancelled their trips to the country. The French Foreign ministry is advising its citizens not to travel to Kenya.
This is just the beginning of an economic chaos.

Kibaki should be stopped. News here give figures of more than 180 people killed in the violences all over the country. The police have really massacred the population. Interview of rioters by French radio reporters show that these wananchi are really determined to get justice done.

Everybody knows that up to the point some irresponsible youths lost patience and started looting and burning innocent law abiding citizen's businesses this election had been entirely peaceful and violence free. The point is the presence of riot police and GSU was not to instigate panic but a (admittedly heavy handed) response to it. Wile many of the things that have transpired leave alot to be desired there was no way a peaceful or credible solution be achieved while these thugs were roaming the streets and spreading terror.

Are U serious Manta Ray?
written by Jandege , December 31, 2007
The EU observers and other international overseers have declared serious doubts about the presidential tallies.
The riots are a response to injustice perpetrated by the Kenyan people. Mark my words, when people lose faith in the electoral process, a dangerous scenario results. What surprises me is even supposedly enlightened people are trying to justify an injustice which deep down they know has been perpetrated. And on what basis? Tribe I suppose, we are back in the 60's.

From Kericho
written by Truthseeker , January 01, 2008
Information from two reliable sources regarding the situation in Kericho: Firstly, Kisiis who work in some of the tea factories have been targeted. At one KTDA factory, the directors of the factory were keeping a mob who wanted to get at Kisiis who had taken shelter in the factory at bay. When APs arrived, the directors stepped aside but tension was very high and the situation was volatile. I've not heard what the final outcome was/is but I'm hoping there was a peaceful resolution.

democracy is not an event
written by patriot , January 02, 2008
democracy is not an event or something you pick on the way. its a painful process that is sometimes shaped by events as you are witnessing today. sometimes you've got to cut corners.. sometimes you've got to be crue to be kind. when time comes to write today's history you will be amazed by the importance of the seemingly distasteful decisions made in the process.. let us pick the pieces and move on
