Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan arrives in Nairobi today to begin peace talks between President Kibaki and ODM opposition leaders. [Check for Updates]

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni is also set to arrive in Kenya to engage in mediation talks. The government has called on the opposition to take the matters of the election fraud to court, while the opposition has called for the resignation of President Kibaki and a subsequent re-election.

There are reports that the police are using tear gas to disperse youth supporting the Party of National Unity (PNU) who are demonstrating in Nairobi. These youth are led by Ndunga Waruinge who was one of the contestants in Langata seat who stepped down to allow Stanley Livondo to run against Raila Odinga.

Uganda's Yoweris Museveni, chair of the East African Community, arrives in Kenya today. Also Graca Machel from Mozambique will be in Kenya as part of the team on international peace mediations on Kenya's crisis. Machel is internationally known for her advocacy on women's and children's rights.

Kofi Annan arrives in Kenya, Reuters reports:

Annan called on the two sides to begin talks and said he was determined to help find a solution as quickly as possible.

"Our message to the parties is this: there can be no solution without genuine dialogue, no lasting peace and stability without cooperation, and determined and sustained respect for the rule of law and human rights," he said.

"Kenya occupies a very important place in this continent ... It has been a stable haven for many refugees and others and it would be a disaster if we were to lose it."

Seems like fair procedure: police must quell rioting and hooliganism on either side.

It has been said (even by international Media)that the 2007 elections were too close to call. Obviously, without belabouring this point, it means there are as equal number on the other side of the divide who actually believe that Kibaki did win the elections. Although, no much protest or noise seems to be coming from this camp, it doesn't mean that the over 4 million people who voted for Kibaki don't have an opinion regarding this dipute.

It's just that most of us as soon as we voted went back to do what we do day to day. We had faith in our vote and at no one time did we seat to contemplate on how we were to react to the outcome of the election results, whether Kibaki or Raila had won. Either way we took for granted that life had to go on. We had no clue that there such horrifying plans to be meted against us for exercising our right to vote the president of our choice.

Obviously, the events that have unfolded since then have stupified and continue to stun most of us. Of course we are trying to gather our scattered wits with the aim of first trying to make sense of what is happening and secondly salvage our motherland from falling apart.

I for one believe that majority of Kenyans regardless of which ethnic background one comes from are not able to identify with the doctrines, or causes being peddled around. The burning of people sheltered in churches or the hoisting of coffins in public is such bizarre activities for most of us.

I am not in denial but I deeply believe that in a short while, the voice of reason will arise and prevail upon the country. The befuddled ethnic agendas being pushed around will certainly wither as they will not find fertile soils to take root in, as most of us have minds and hearts that are rich enough with love for one another, forbearance, long suffering and the rationality of thoughts and minds to know that this season of madness will come to pass. We shall forgive those persons who are commiting this hideous actions for surely they do not know what they are doing as they are under the strong influence of evil forces. We know once again our beloved country will emerge out of the bowels of hell, much more stronger, refined and deeply welded together as one nation and one people.

I encourage those Kenyans who are silently fighting this war with humility to continue in fortitude with the same, but let no-one think it is a sign of weakness or surrender. Remember "The meek shall inherit the earth..."

Raila\'s field days have come
written by Wephukulu , January 22, 2008
The reality of Kenya politics is that you can never underestimate your rival and believe you are in control. The tact is that people are watching, and sooner or later, Raila's field days will come to an end.

The lwuo and Kales have caused mayhem and wanton killing of innocent Kenyans whose only crime is that they happen to belong to communities that may not have voted for him, especially in Eastern and Central provinces. He is therefore punishing them for looking the other side and making him loose the 'gift' his father didn't live to get either.

The mungiki militia having been subdued by the former minister for internal security months before end of last year, are regrouping and recruiting in a big way. (...)

Instead of glorifying mungiki, which will make you a refugee, please pray that peace be found within our borders. (...)
You know there are people who are just waiting for the call for guns. The illegal dealers who can easily take advantage of the current anarchy to make themselves rich as the country goes the Rwandan way.

Leech Leaders
written by Thandi , January 22, 2008
It seems continually apparent that we are still deficient of apt leaders of the people; the only obvious prophecy is as these bulls charge at one another with perfected arrogance, the only victims remain to be the grass beneath their feet.
Martin Luther King, in reference to the bombing that killed for little girls in a church, said, " the biggest burden in the shoulders of a leader is the death of his followers. Some of these who we call leaders seem to be allergic to emotion, at the same proving deserts of pride and selfishness...

Nonetheless, I am beyond conviction that many Kenyans still have a dream

Ndura Waruinge should be appealed to to stop these shenanighans. The moment Mungiki gets a new lease of life, ODM supporters (especially Luos and Kalenjins) will be ruthlessly wiped out and not only that, that will be the end of kenya. I think the last thing we want as a country is a rejuvenated and provoked Mungiki force. It will just be too muh to bear

Raila Vs Kibaki
written by Wuod Aketch , January 23, 2008
No compromise!!

Among those thought to be encouraging Mr Kibaki to give no ground are John Michuki, who previously ran internal security and is now in charge of roads, and George Saitoti, who goes from education to handle internal security. Mr Michuki was involved in attempts during Mr Kibaki's first term to use foreign mercenaries to stop local media from publishing some stories to do with organised crime. This pair's prominence suggests that Mr Kibaki is ready to use repression to stay in power.

First of, I don't support either side, I am on the side of Kenya and the LEADER THAT KENYANS (at least the majority) CHOSE.

I find it interesting that no one is protesting/marching for Kenya, her democracy and her people (especially those that have been affected).

Both sides have people protesting that each side won. Kivuitu stated he did not know who won. So how can someone take to the street screaming "we won" when neither side attained such a thing?

That is the challenge Annan is facing. Even though ODM want re-election, they only want it because PNU allegedly stole it from them. PNU says they don't negotiate with losers. How is this so? The election was so close to call.. there were blatant signs of rigging (and quite frankly, both sides could be guilty).

This is why as Kenyans we need to be sober. Why burn down a church in the name of someone who might not even have won? Why dismiss another party and say you won't negotiate with them as losers when it shows that you might not have won either?

I have hope for Kenya. That we will fight for our democracy but by peaceful means and not by these deplorable crimes that continue in the Rift Valley. When 2012 rolls around, I hope our leaders learn that the most important entity are the Kenyan people and it is a privilege to serve Kenya and her people.. and if you don't respect that privilege, you will not only be voted out, but will have to accept that vote.

GOD BLESS KENYA.
