Post-Election Violence Perpetrators' Names PDF Print E-mail
Written by Open Thread

You've probably heard that the KNCHR report released earlier had an annex in which names were named. The report, despite making fascinating - and damning - evidence was issued sans annex.

The names named in the Nairoi Star were kind of unconvincing: is it really likely that a former Minister for Finance was the only senior ODM figure involved in the violence? Not really. You can now sate your curiosity; Ory has managed to get her hands on a significantly more plausible list. Here is the pdf. Quite frankly, at least one of those names comes as a huge surprise. Any thoughts?

UPDATE: Here is a HTML version of the Africa Confidential Report, for those of you that don't like pdfs. And here is a (pdf) list of names.

surprised?
written by Daniel.Waweru , August 28, 2008
Key paragraphs:

The KNCHR’s list of 'alleged perpetrators' includes six cabinet ministers: Uhuru Kenyatta from President Mwai Kibaki’s Party of National Unity, Sally Kosgei, Henry Kosgey, William Ruto, Najib Balala and the late Kipkalya Kones from Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement. It also included allegations against a bishop and several preachers, Christian and Muslim, for involvement in the violence.

To substantiate its 'list of perpetrators', which includes 20 MPs, the KNCHR report goes into some detail about political meetings leading up to the election crisis and some held once the violence had started. It arguesforcefully that at least part of the violence was well organised prior to the election. For example, it reports that Agriculture Minister William Ruto (MP for Eldoret North) held a meeting in August 2007 with other senior ODM leaders in Kipkelion near Kericho which included the late Lorna Laboso (MP for Sotik), the late Kipkalya Kones (MP for Bomet and a Minister) and Franklin Bett (MP for Bureti). At this meeting, the report states the attendees resolved to carry out mass evictions of non-Kalenjins from their homes in the Rift Valley, particularly the Kikuyu and Abagusii.

In a separate section, the report names former High Commissioner to London and now Minister of Higher Education Sally Kosgei as 'planning, inciting and financing' the violence in the Rift Valley. It also accuses Tourism Minister Najib Balala of inciting and paying youths Ksh500 (US$7.37) each to cause violence.

Not surprising
written by Kim G , August 28, 2008
The report shows us what Kenyans have known all along: that the violence was incited and driven by politicians. If they did not want violence to take place, it would never have happened. Of course, the politicians and their many supporters are going to do everything they can to discredit the report, but it will not change the fact that they have the blood of innocents on their hands.

It is sad, really
written by Thaths , August 28, 2008
When I was young I used to think that educated people were smart and somehow less corrupt. How wrong I was! Sally Kosgeii was one of the first Kenyans to be educated in the US (along with Barack Obama Sr.). And to think of the depths these people have sunk to!

I am surprised to see the Overfed Baby's name. Somehow he doesnt fit the type....in fact, wasnt he involved in pacifying restive dudes in kangemi? Wierd. As for Dr. Kosgei...who would have guessed? I am stunned, really I am, doesnt look capable of engaging in murder expeditions. Too bad.

The list is just BS
written by wuod aketch , August 28, 2008
Who can swallow such a far fetched list. If we cannot find those that killed JM Kariuki, Tom Mboya, Robert Ouko, Pinto ... how do you expect an organization like the KNHCR to get real evidence linking the people in that list to the violence?
We now know very well from returning officers testifying in the Waki hearings, that the results of the presidential and parliamentary elections were cooked http://www.nation.co.ke/News/r...index.html but this new info is not just enough to make Kibaki resign!! Do you think that the courts will do something about it and Bwana Kiviutu resign? Non, we'll continue riding the truck with punctured tires until the rims wear out out.
By the way, the most incompetent minister for the moment is the
Public Health Minister Beth Mugo. The filthy abattoirs of Dagoretti that were closed down by NEMA and most of the houses in Riruta on Wanyee Road which empty human waste directly into the river are incidentally found in the areas where Mugo is local MP. Unsurprised
written by Daniel.Waweru , August 29, 2008
Overfed baby's inclusion was no surprise: he could hardly have encouraged the murder of Gikuyu in Ungem to while the Economist's reporter was watching. Lesser Kosgei is a surprise, but not so much: she wrote a notably bitter piece after her sacking post-2002.

Missing from the list is BB, who by all accounts is now being prepared by the SpoonFed one's family as their vehicle to power. Next, expect in true BB fashion, that the Rift Valley will be betrayed, left at the table with their blood-drenched knives, the Rift Valley declared disposable and the likes of Ruto and Kones (DRIP) blamed for all the bloodshed.

It is interesting the excision of the annex, particularly as it indicates the ODM's tryst with KNHCR has lost none of its passion. No one you notice is being held accountable for Kibera. Ahem.

revenge ?
written by ezz , August 31, 2008
I thought that Uhuru would have come in long after the elections and the mayhem had gone on for a while, to help avenge and stop the murder of the Agikuyu. Anyone with info to the contrary pls enlighten us.

Self Defence
written by wabi , September 02, 2008
The report is rather heavy on names frome central province and rather short on details people met and raised funds (not a crime) but did they purchase any weapons and where were they used ? I tend to think that self defence is not a crime, where govt has failed to protect you then the onus is on you to protect yourself. Forced circumcision and attacking innocent people in naivasha was criminal and the individuals should
charged as such. People raising funds for self defence cannot be considered criminal inlight of the persecution they had already suffered any court would be hard pressed to find them guilty. Uhuru should not be too worried by this report.
