Uhuru Park, January 3, 2008 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joseph Hamisi Silaha
Tuesday, 01 January 2008

On January 3rd, 2008 Raila and the ODM Pentagon have announced a "Million Man March" to Uhuru Park, Nairobi to demonstrate to the government their ire at the flawed electoral tallying process.

The rally, I believe, should go on but the ODM must insist that its supporters not carry sticks, stones or machetes -- and that they do not rape, pillage and steal as they have done in the last few days.  If they carry weapons -- even defensive weapons -- they will fritter away any international support and sympathy that they have and encourage the security forces to respond aggressively.

I am much more pro-Kenya than pro any particular candidate. I want Kenya to be a great place for my children and their children, and importantly, for your children too.  Recently, if anything, I have been somewhat sympathetic to the Kibaki Tena campaign, if only because of the astounding economic growth that has sprouted in his term.  But the last four days have shaken any faith I had in the establishment, in the "wazees".  I can assure you that if there was another election today I would not vote for the Kibaki team.  (It also makes my decision easier because Raila Odinga and the Pentagon more closely reflect Kenya's diverse ethnicities than the Kibaki, Michuki, Karume, Karua and Kimunya gang).

In what I believe has to be an unprecedented admission of culpability and unconscionable dereliction of duty, the Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Kenya admitted today that he was under immense pressure from PNU and ODM-K to release the results and under corresponding opposite pressure from diplomats and the Kenya Human Rights Commission to hold the results back for a week.

I am disappointed with Mwai Kibaki, he appears removed from reality.  His New Year message was short and apathetic and he continued to call the election "free and fair".  His government has banned the rally on Thursday, but it MUST GO ON.  If we could all just stop thinking about Kenya in our lifetimes and think about what we must do for our progeny, it is clear that we cannot acquiesce.  We insist on having a truly democratic country and peaceful mass demonstrations are a fundamental cornerstone of democracy.

If there is one message I would like to leave everyone with it is that of a lone unarmed person standing up to a column of tanks in Tiananmen Square in 1989.  He continues to have significant impact on many lives, including my own.  There is immense power in non-aggression.  Our policemen and other security agents are themselves citizens and many of them sympathize with ODM.  I do not see them attacking peaceful demonstrators carrying olive branches instead of machetes.  President Kibaki, in the end, will have to concede something (kitu kidogo?).

at the moment as the country is reeling and trying to find its footing they decide to hold a march? and non violent? come on when did that ever happen? i fear that the concept is noble but as things stand tempers are frayed hence something shall go amiss. i went to work today tomorrow i stay indoors since i do not wish to run into either the mob or the police.

I am of the opinion that the 'million men' march is no longer called for. The situation as it stands is very sad and somber for the whole nation and I don't think such emotions would auger well for such a gathering. Besides, any desirable level of calmness has not been restored and there is a lot of bitterness, anger and grief amongst so many souls affected by the turn of events.

But that is not all. I would imagine the aim of calling for such a gathering was to show support and solidarity for Raila's win, hoping in the process that the same will gather momentum and perhaps help to regain the 'stolen victory' as percieved by many.

Having said that, the desired final outcome may not necessarily turn out to be. I strongly believe that despite what is percieved to have happened, strong doubts and loss of credibility have engulfed the whole of the presidential election, to a point where either claim of victory is not without its heavy dose of doubts and mistrust and therefore seemingly unfair on the other party.

As things stand right now, it appears that no amount of re-auditing or recounting will make any difference in convincing either party to accept any potential results. In such a case, I think it is only plausible that the whole of presidential election is directed towards a fresh repeat, perhaps in the very near future once the state of affairs acquire some calmness and peace returns.

At the same time, whilst it goes without saying that there is a need to call for nationwide peace by all the parties concerned, Raila should wisely consider initiating the petition process as stipulated in law, and let the constitution take its course irrespective of his prejudices of the system. In essence I believe, Raila should have the courage of forgoing his 'win' for the time being, and seek to regain his claim afresh through a provision of another ballot when time and atmosphere allows and that is the best way forward.

AS to the mindless killings taking place in our beloved motherland upon the innocent victims, my heart bleeds for my brothers and sisters, be they Kikuyus or Luos, for they are all innocent victims of greed, selfishness and madness of a few individuals who only have the interest of their pockets at heart.

viable solution?
written by knjenga , January 02, 2008
An independent commission, preferably international one of the past elections should be set up to look into the whole election. The commission like the American one on 9/11 should address what happened and recommend solutions to prevent this from happening again.

Recommendations should be given on how to make the ECK genuinely independent and address the logistics of national elections and polices. I am dumbfounded that with a total of less than 10 Million votes the process is not automated and computerized.

My friend, do you know how difficult it is to control 1 million angry people? If Kibaki allows this meeting to go on then that will be the end of his goverment because the chaos and violence will be unmanagable.

The law will never work if the same Gicheru-who was ready to swear kibaki in even before the announcement of results- is still the chief Justice.
Raila should take this opportunity to implement the kenyan desire for a new constitution. Let him through the international community give Kibaki 3months to put Bomas draft in place, to make into law the IPPG agreements both on nomination of ECK commissioners and MPs to parliament, release of more funds to the grass root without political alienations based on support to the incumbent plus many other issues which you know. Failure to this mass demonstrations and sunctions to force the president out of the office. Again this is my opinion. I believe that if Kibaki is for kenya and for kenyans he should accept this conditions to redefine the system.
I'm opposed to violence, killings and looting and destruction to property but this is the time to corrent this situation to a great extent.

Stop such inciting remarks!
written by abdulmote , January 02, 2008
"As Raila put it, he cannot give Kenyans an anaethetic and allow us to be raped. The match must go on!"

What is the point here eh? I find the above remarks asa calculation to further incite the public to continue slaughtering each other whilst Raila himself is in the comfort and safety of his shelter somewhere! What kind of leadership is this?

Much as I detested the just concluded election process, I am equally appalled by such an attitude by Raila and his ilks! For God's sake, those being slaughtered are also humanbeings like yourself and your families.

I also note with concern that the blame game is not confined to only side. Few minutes ago I saw a news clip in Sky showing Kivutha stating that the ODM had financed and planned this 'genocide' well before the elections!

Similarly, Raila stated the same thing; that the government is committing genocide on God knows who!

Surely, such a blame game is not going to take us anywhere. Why do such animals thrive on bloodletting of fellow humanbeings is beyond my understanding. And all this for power?

What is Kibaki doing to Kenya?
written by Jandege , January 02, 2008
Kivutha Kibwana should stop inciting Kenyans to genocide. He has no moral authority having been rejected by the electorate so he should not be quoted here. Waste of space.

Tuju is talking of using live bullets on Kenyans, are you surprised that he lost in Rarieda? Such arrogance is what we should be condemning, not a peaceful rally. T

You Do Have A Point Here...
written by Silaha , January 02, 2008
Chameleon:

You have a valid point here, in this article I was asserting that we need to have peaceful mass demonstrations. However moments ago someone pointed out to me that even Raila may not be able to control the 1,000,000 people.

He also pointed out to me that no sitting government that wants to maintain some semblance of normalcy could allow the rally to go on. Not a rally of Kenyans, we're not Ukrainians, we cannot ensure that we'll be singing kumbaya.

But I still maintain that sitting at home and holding our collective breath until 2007 is not an option.

why are we africans like this?
written by simba , January 02, 2008
Raila has been arrested countless times, and detained for years, for what? Matiba, Rubia, Jaramogi, Githongo et al, sacrificed alot . For What? Do we kenyans appreciate the actions of these few selfless heroes? No, all we do is unleash insults to those who sacrifice for us, and full of praise to the Kibakis, Lucys, Michukis and Kalonzos of this world, who were living in comfort receiving their pay cheques and going about their businessess when Raila, Ngilu et al were busy fighting MO1 and hundreds lost their lives for the sake of the freedom we used to enjoy (until 28th of December 2007). As the Swahilis say, asante ya punda ni mateke. In the mean time it is back to square one, another 20 years of the struggle for liberation, another 20 years of hopelessness and toil, another 20 years of police brutality. As we all saw on Sky News, a policeman (or soldier) in civilian clothes aiming his AK47 and shooting live bullets at a crowd for protesting. The life of a mwafrika is worthless. Maybe we are all just pundas. Just when we were about to show Africa and the world that africans are civilised and can govern themselves to prosperity, we end up proving the mzungu right. You know what they say about us...Anyway, for those interested, try and watch all the clips you find of this man on Youtube. He makes alot of sense notwithstanding... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5DrXS1RaQM

Simba..thanks for the utube vid...it got me thinking....this 5% growth that prez. Kibaki is praised 4 is a true blind folder....the video is solid proof for that; its like kenya was a ticking time bomb...Dec 28th 00:00, 3 regimes of anger against the power and money thirsty bandits came forth....2002 predictions from Mutahi are unfortunately cripping on.

my dilema is this, I don see any viable leaders left to chose from: Emilio, Amolo, Musyoka......MAYBE new elections will bring calm, but what next...

Our institutions are devilishly corrupt, our leaders a worser breed....we need a miracle

Here is the sadest part, many have suffered and will continue to do so because of the impeccable pride and arrogance of this men entitled with power.

.....men, democracy is more complicated that I thought...

You guyz have the facts right. We are busy pointing fingers to one man. The Question is if the people of kenya were very comfortable, living well there would be no one in the streets fighting. Look at it the areas affected most are slums and low income areas. Some of this people hoped for salvation in 2002 but it eluded them. whereas the govt was claiming economic growth the common man was feeling nothing.
Take for instance this man who walks to work everyday from kayole or kibera to industrial area, he has never felt what a good road is and what a pothole is, if you can't help him to be able to board a vehicle he will never see what his money does. Remember he takes short cuts!!
The pests are sucking all the life that is in this people and making themselves fatter. The anger that came out was simply because once again the kenyans thought that time for liberation had reached and strongly feel that they were denied this for teh next five years.
But let me say that what is coming out now didn't just start on 27th DEC 07. This started in 2002 after kibaki failed to meet the expectations of kenyans, reached critical point during the referendum and when elasticity limit was exceeded on 29th the people could not hold it back. I've seen a scenario whereby when someone is so annoyed he hits anything around him to avoid hitting the other person to cool down the temper. This is what happened to the property. Kenyans stopped this habit long time ago.
I however note that there were criminal elements who took this opportunity to fulfil there desires.
Bottom line if the power can be taken from up there and distrubuted only then can kenyans be helped.
But again the monsters will stop at nothing to ensure that the status quo is maintained.
Now which way?
GOD HELP KENYA!!!

Appease a Thief?
written by Mwambu , January 02, 2008
Letting Kibaki off the hook after he blatantly stole the elections would be akin to sacrificing principles against someone like Kibaki who has no principle.

The majority of Kenyans used their democratic right on Dec.27th to vote out Kibaki and all his government stood for.

The march at Uhuru Park should continue.

You need to get rid of that victim mentality. What the two have shown is total disregard of peoples needs but there egos. Both parties rigged so stop pointing fingers. And we are state of cessation and both parties had about the same number of supporters and thats not counting Kalonzos. What we need is to put the need of the country first and that is to get rid of this two leaders. There will be no reconciliation when both sides feel cheated and no clear majority.

I cant believe what i'm reading on these pages!! Someone has instigated mass genocide of a people from one community so that he can take over the reigns of power no matter what and idiots are supporting this!!There are reports that all this was planned way before these elections !!

What is the world coming to i dare ask where loss of life has no meaning? How does one explain the "entombing" of 40 people whose only crime was seek sanctuary in a church? I wonder how some would react if one those was a member of their immediate family. Those who tried to escape the scorching flames were met with machetes from crazed young men.

It has also been reported that tens of thousands of young men have disappeared into "burnt forest" outside Eldoret armed to the teeth. What is their evil mission ? Maybe raila or his pentagon collegue William Ruto (M.P elect from the area)should explain this to all kenyans.

Are they being trained to target a certain community in the rift valley for mass genocide ? Are we seeing the beginning of Rwanda all over again ?

I cannot even begin to fathom how someone would even contemplate supporting the congregation of a million people or whatever the number is. Uhuru park is a stone's throw away from the heart of our beautiful city. What do you think would happen if one million enraged youth overran security personnel in their quest to plunder our city ?
Better the devil you know than the one you don't.Looking at the events of the past few days, i am sorry but i would not put Amollo anywhere near that seat of power.

He scares the living daylights out of me.And many contributors on these pages find all these as one big joke.

God help us all and God help my beloved country.

Disgusted Kenyan.

Throwing stones, destroying property and looting leans more towards hooliganism than protesting. The only way to deal with hooliganism is to apply equal and opposite force.

Now im a coward when i try to float ideas and solutions. No need to get emotional;just passing my opinion. This is my take Kikuyus did not vote en masse because they completely love Kibaki and his government. If that was the case all Kibaki generals would be back for a second term. Other issues and reasons aside the hate and negativity generated by Raila campaign brought out survival instinct. So, let me get this straight, are you fighting for majority in votes or minority in parliament. Don't mix the two.

From Office of Public Communic
written by Wuod Aketch , January 03, 2008
This is what the Official Government Spokesperson and Public Communications, Dr Mutua is saying on his website about the situation in Kenya:

# Leaders are responsible for actions of their supporters, for example when their supporters burn a church and kill people.

# Its very sad time in our country to see politically instigated violence in the country where women and children have been killed.

# President Kibaki is ready to speak to anyone and at anytime. However it should be noted that Kenya is not at war and does not need mediators or peace keepers. Dialog is open with anyone but the talk is not mediation or seize fire.

# Its good to see that things have gone back to normal. Many people have agreed to go back to work and have said they are tired of Politics.

# The Military personnel like they have done before, have been directed to participate in the transportation and distribution of humanitarian aid. This includes food, blankets and medical supplies to affected areas.
Have you seen his CV?
Mutua is computer literate on both PC and Mac, and conversant with Adobe PhotoShop, Quark Express, Ventura, CorelDraw, Illustrator, Excel, Adobe PageMaker and Web Design Programs. In Australia, he undertook Communication projects for Telstra

Attacking Peaceful Demonstrato
written by Silaha , January 03, 2008
I was wrong. I had written:

Our policemen and other security agents are themselves citizens and many of them sympathize with ODM. I do not see them attacking peaceful demonstrators carrying olive branches instead of machetes.

But I was wrong, our security forces can attack peaceful demonstrators. Seems somewhat barbaric to me.

Wrote CNN:

Odinga supporters carried white flags, olive branches and protest signs as they tried to get to Uhuru Park, where the rally was to have been held.

Government forces used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the crowds.
