It is late afternoon when the twins come in; Akello is
sitting at her desk sifting through the day's email. There's nothing new or
interesting, but she feels she must do something. Look busy.
Fiona guides them in, Akello gets up wipes her hands off on
her skirt, walks up to the door, unsure, and should she embrace them? Maybe
not.
Fiona(45): I will
leave you now, please call me if you need anything, I must go and pick your
father up. (She gives the girls a quick look
and then closes the door gently behind her as she leaves)
Achieng (15): Hello, I
hope we are not interrupting.
Achieng': is your
job very busy? What do you do? One of the girls at our church said you are very
rich and Mum says you travel a lot.
Akello (29.5): It does
get very busy at times, I am very happy you came, I have thought of nothing
else all my life, this is all I have ever wanted
Awuor(15): Easy for
you to say that now, it was not easy for us you know. You did not want us.
Achieng: Don't
say that Samantha, she was only a girl herself.
Akello: Who is
Samantha? What was wrong with the names I gave you? And what do they call you
now?
Awuor: Juliet. She loves the stage.
Achieng: It is a
tragedy.
Akello: What is?
I tried.........
Achieng: Never
mind, sounds morbid now, but that was an attempt at a joke.
Silence
Akello: Do you
act too? What is your talent?
Awuor: I do not
have any really. I am just plain me.

Achieng: She
looks a lot like you, she is beautiful. Everyone says so, and dad likes her better.
Silence
Achieng: Is it ok
that I call him dad?
Akello: Yes,
dear, yes darling, I am so happy just to finally see my girls.
Awuor: Do you
have a big house? Mum said you have a pool on your roof.
Achieng: I will
be like you when....... after university.
Awuor: No, you'll
get married to that Ramesh of yours and have many babies.
Achieng: No, I won't......
Silence
Akello: Look at what
I got you, they have your names on them, I hope you can have them.
Awuor: Mother said...
Achieng: Who is
Awuor?
Akello:(handing over two gold chains) This one
is yours, Achieng and this is yours, Awuor. I named you after my sisters;
they died in an accident when I was eleven.
Achieng: Thank
you. They are really pretty, yes they are, thank you.
Akello: Its
nothing really, I have so much to give you, so much to share
Achieng: Are
these diamonds?
Awuor: No, silly,
they are not, they
Akello: We would
make such great friends.
Silence
Achieng: Do you
miss your sisters? Were they older?
Akello: Yes they
were older than me. How is school? Are you both doing well? What are your
favourite subjects?
Awuor: I hate
math, but business studies is great. We have a very good teacher from Malaysia.
Achieng: I like
Theatre Arts. Awuor is going to the swimming nationals in Kisumu.
Akello: Oh! That
is something. I did not do much when I was your age. Not too sporty.
Silence
Akello: I used to
sing when I was in school. I was in a few productions, the Wizard of Oz
Achieng: We sing
at church, church is really good. There's a strong youth group. Why did you
stop singing?
Akello: No
reason, you just grow older, and there is less to be happy about. You are very
beautiful girls you know, runs in the family.....
Silence
Awuor: I do not
like it at our house
Achieng': It is
alright really. Mum loves us to bits.
Akello: What is
wrong Awuor? You can tell me anything you know
Awuor: Hmmmph
Achieng: Growing
pains, we are fine, really we are.
Awuor: Where is
our father, do you know him?
Akello: I'm so
sorry.
Achieng: (glares
at Awuor)
Akello: It has
been so hard and I just wanted the best for everyone. I was too young, too
foolish, and I wish.......
Achieng: That's
alright. We can start over
Awuor: Do you
have a swimming pool at your house?
