The day I died PDF Print E-mail

The light struck my eyes, but without pain
I was floating among clouds;

deep blue skies and fresh ocean winds
I was clad in white silken robes
all around me were others
some like chicken in clusters,
others like me, alone and confused
I raised my hand and scanned the heavens
I was looking for God;
And my mother,
And my father,
And all those that had been plucked
Instead I saw shattered lives;
The man under Madison bridge:
The child sniffling in Iraq rubbles:
I saw red walls ridden with lead
A woman grieving her sixteen year old son
Bloated stomachs of malnutrition
and my heart cried:
I turned my face away from the bright gates
With light streaking thru the bars
Bells chiming in unison
Before I poked the snooze button.

That limbo between sleeping and waking is so surreal - like a cross between nightmare and dream, airbrushed with reality!

A beautiful write!

I the irony of the poem is beautiful. What lies behind the pearly gates does not sound like anything the holy scriptures tells us. I particularly like the irony in "bloated stomachs of malnutrition" which probably existed side by side with bloated stomachs of greed?

Given that the "heavens" sound more like our own little earth with the homeless man under the bridge, the kid being "shocked and awed" by bombs in Iraq and malnutrioned babies (perhaps somewhere in Africa), would it be fair to look at the transition you are talking about as birth? or the luxury of the unborn being able to preview life before birth so that (s)he can make an informed decision on whether to stay or "poke the snooze button" ?
