Jua Kali on the Net PDF Print E-mail

I consider the use of blogging one of my top ten strategies for the growth of small businesses ;a strategy one can take up without incurring huge marketing and advertising costs.

That most blogging platforms offer free services, as long as one adheres to the rules and regulations, should be embraced to assist small businesses especially in Africa where the cost of such services are higher than what most small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) can afford.

For instance compared to conventional websites, blogging would cost you almost nothing except the time you take to publish. When we equate time to money, building a business blog would cost you roughly half or less the amount it would take to build an online product portfolio.

Businesses that can successfully embrace the power of blogging include the Jua Kali (informal small scale merchants) that are based in Kenya who create a wide portfolio of products using recycled materials and whose product quality often outdoes the deeper pocketed big players. In a typical day, a Jua Kali factory is capable of creating products worth millions of dollars. Unfortunately not all such products are able to sell because of what I consider artificial market restrictions. Smart as they are, Jua kali vendors are not able to make significant sales as they lack proper marketing mechanisms.

At a business support session I met Mr. Mbai, a Kenyan Jua Kali entrepreneur, who has never stepped into any school of carpentry but can work wood better than wood peckers. In a month, Mr. Mbai’s workshop churns out products that he sometimes cannot sell, and has to either scrap or suffer storage costs for. Most of the time his products fetch only a break-even price, leaving no room for growth. Asked why this situation persisted, he explained that his business depended mostly on sales made by self-appointed agents who he reckons give him a raw deal. Goodwill and customer referral also played a key role in determining his sales.

hot and bothered

With advice from BT International a corporate branding company that is working with SMEs to improve their market penetration using affordable branding strategies, Mr. Mbai was able to single out lack of product information by potential clients as an important factor that leads to low sales. He also learnt that he could not make just any products hoping and wishing that they would sell. To be able to respond profitably to the specific needs, he needed solid facts about his target market, their needs and how much they could afford to pay him.

Immediately after learning about this conventional business issues, Mr. Mbai was quick to point out that his business was not as big and therefore could not raise enough capital to meet the requirements that had been advised. This was not an issue as far as BT International was concerned. Firstly the easiest and most affordable way to let the world know about his products was to build a customised website that detailed his product with all the prices and how to access them. It is easier said than done because Mr. Mbai neither has the knowledge nor the time to work out a customised website. To make the matter worse, he cannot afford to procure such services, as they would significantly raise his operating costs.

For Mr. Mbai, what was wishful thinking is already bearing fruit and costs him as little as 10 US dollars a month to access professionally managed online portfolio. He started small, but now his business blog is on its second phase before finally turning into a customised corporate website. The phased approach was used to make the service more affordable to this kind of business. All sorts of comments that were posted on Mr. Mbai’s professional online product portfolio helped him re-engineer his business complete with a brand name and specific sub brand names for the different products that he churns out every month. Now the sky is the limit.

You are absolutely right in advocating a phased approach to building a web presence. It makes sense since our smaller businesses have restricted resources.

Where can one find this bog, btw?

Jayawardene,
Right now Mr. Mbai and partners are in the second phase of building their their online portfolio that reqiured product and domain name registration so I was requested not to mention the names (for now) untill all the registration is secured as far as the name(s) is concerned. I will gladly do that as soon as I get the go ahead to post the name(s) in question.

Ken Teyie writes well, and I like that we have a number of threads here ( a large number ) that are not your staple Kenyan political article.

Jayawardene,
Where can we find this bog? Surely, you meant blog?

As Kenyans take up the internet in larger numbers, I am sure the Jua Kali trade can grow phenomenally, especially if E-bay like structures are available that allow the whole world access to the few or many items that these viwandas have to offer.

P.S, WHy are they being charged $10 per month? Sounds wheezy to me.

We are working on some solutions that entrepreneurs of every sort will find most useful. Should be up in the next month or so.

The internet should change the nature of the Kenyan market place forever, democratize it and allow business that churn out quality to grow, even if they are starved of the capital that was a traditional requirement for growth and expansion. Watch this space.

Thanks very much for that Branded. Looking forward to more info, once ready.

Timothy thanks for spotting my typo. Fortunately I don't make big Misteaks.

Emmo, It's the last corner before the home straight. Watching in anticipation. Godspeed

Timothy Wainaina, Thanks for the complement.
To answer your question, they are being charged 10$ a month for the entire training and management of their online portfolio. Granted, some if not all of them have no idea about using the internet for business. Another issue is that this guys neither have the time nor the "luxury" for online stuff therefore its much easier when they concentrate on their core core business while outsourcing the the rest at the mentioned price, and it works.

PS: Do you remember sometime back when the business daily website went off air because of domain registration? Yes the same company that registrered the domain is doing the registration for Mr.Mbai and partners. With this in mind, please lets wait, I promise will give the details as soon as I am allowed.

Thanks for the article. I agree that having a website is now essential to even local businesses. There are unfortunately several poorly designed and maintained websites out there. People need to pay more attention to the importance of layout simplicity and professional aesthetics. Some websites look like their were put together as an after though.

Jua Kali entrepreneurs who would like a *free* presence on the internet should look at www.nairobieverything.com.

They are able to upload a description of their products and even pictures of their work - all for free.

Check it out!

I absolutely agree with this post. That's why I stated my own blog on Afropolitans, or those of us in the African Diaspora who are willing to change the mindset on what it means to be a black person in the world. Check it out.
