An eminent American professor and Nobel Prize Winner was quoted in a recent report in the UK Independent newspaper claiming that Africans are genetically less intelligent than Europeans.
His comments have met with calls for arrest on hate speech charges, even as he contended that Western policies towards African countries were wrongly
based on an assumption that black people were as clever as their white
counterparts. Testing he suggested proved the contrary. He claimed that genes
are responsible for creating differences in human intelligence, and that proof of these could be
found within a decade.
He added that there was a natural desire that all human beings should be
equal but people who have to deal with black employees find this not
true.
The professor has a history of such statements, and some believe that he was out to get the world worked up, but it is also clear that he picks his targets very clearly and that at his core he is a bigot. Does it matter? His position of eminence means that his opinions carry a lot of weight, and especially as he attempts to link his statement to his area of expertise and what he is most famous for.
Should he be ignored? What have you thought of the debate on this matter around the internet? Is there really such a thing as an intelligence gene that can be handed down? Even in our country, among our ethnicities, such ideas persist and not just among chauvinists either. Is this not an opportunity to banish them for all time?
