Raila does not deserve this treatment PDF  | Print |  E-mail

O ODM-K must certainly be feeling the intense heat of mistrust stoked by the deep rivalry between Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka; this just cannot be gainsaid.
When the chips are finally down, ODM-K may go into the annals of history as the party with had the largest following, but squandered its huge advantage and lost a general election it. True, the referendum may have been a different ball game, but there is no denying that the momentum it initially gave ODM-K, has for most of the year simply been unassailable.

But what seems to be the problem? To put the finger on the pulse, it is imperative that a careful evaluation is undertaken between Raila and Kalonzo - two individuals who strike one as being as different as day is from night.

There are those pretty obvious differences. Kalonzo has been a conformist while Raila has been a rebel (with a cause?) for most of his political life. Indeed, when Raila's restlessness saw him travel the tortuous political path that took him from KANU to Ford to Ford-Kenya to NDP and then back to KANU; then to LDP to Narc and now in ODM-K, the pre-Narc Kalonzo was sitting pretty cosy with KANU even during the days when the independence party was abolishing the secret ballot voting system to pave way for the mlolongo (queue voting system), thus blatantly rigging elections and detaining those considered hot headed politicos like Raila, without trial.

Kalonzo's political metamorphosis has been phenomenal and unlike Raila, is a creation of senior politicians, among which, ironically, Raila himself is to be counted - at least at the later stages. Raila on the other hand has been driven by a passion, a rebellious spirit that has seen him take risk after risk, most times stumbling but all the time gaining some ground.

Kalonzo is the very antithesis of Raila. More patient, more calculating but all the time very determined from the days he was fingered by the late Ukambani political doyen, Mulu Mutisya, before Daniel Moi took him over. Later (in 2002) Raila emboldened Kalonzo to rebel away from the trajectory of the baba na mama political path. Raila activated and re-enforced Kalonzo's submissive political mind, lacing it with a defiant streak that saw Kalonzo move to LDP and ultimately into Kibaki's Cabinet. It all, however, proved a false start with MoU and all .

Ultimately, the Kibaki Cabinet could not withstand the strain brought by rows and the Kalonzos and Railas got kicked out. Truth be told, it then was Raila who was the motor and soul of an ODM- juggernaut that made mince meat of Kibaki at the referendum with William Ruto, Joseph Nyaga, Uhuru Kenyatta and Musalia Mudavadi on tow.

Today, four years down the line, the Kalonzo camp believe that it has amassed enough muscle to take on Raila. Here is what Kalonzo seems to be telling Raila: "I want to be sitting cosy next to the fire place and it does not look like there is enough room for the two of us!" In the light of natural justice, I personally find this bid to elbow out the team leader a blow below the belt.

Between Raila and Kalonzo, who should show up the political light to the other? Your guess could be as good as mine. And this brings me to the question of the ideal method of picking the controversial ODM-K candidate. The movement says that it represents the ultimate future for this country. It says that it holds the key to a democratic nation where all Kenyans will partake in decision making. So, what is this about let's talk and decide who amongst us is best? What a contradiction! What a betrayal! Now, the consensus mode is placed in the management of a Council of Elders headed by Fred Gumo. These elders were chosen not by ODM-K's nationwide followers but by the consensus of the ODM luminaries. The Council does not have an idea as to whether it is acceptable to ODM loyalists since they have never floated out that question to the masses.

Gumo's outfit has failed in the test of inclusiveness. Let the likely ODM-K flag bearer be realised through an open and inclusive democratic delegate exercise. While the Steadman poll ratings used to be favourable to him, Kalonzo was all for the delegate system just like Raila and the rest. But when did his camp lose faith in the system, in favour of consensus?

Raila the Rebel?
written by Amir Ibrahim , July 10, 2007
This is not an idle question. Does the MP for Lang'ata really serve anyone but his own interests. In other words , what is he rebelling against? The government of the day or the injustice in Kenyan society?
Seems to me that when he was in government, both as Moi's and as Kibaki's Minister, he was only too happy to be a system boy. Destroying poor people's property, riding about in police helicopters, abusing his office to enrich his family and himself, and generally sitting on his hands.
That's something for all his supporters to think about. In the meantime, this vicious attacks on Kalonzo are winning you no points. Keep up the work and you are actually campaigning for him if he stands, and ultimately against your candidate. Ukweli, after the Mombasa shout-out, I will be going hoe in December with the express intention of voting in the way that will hurt Raila the most.

For me it is now like Le Pen vs. Chirac in France's previous election, i.e the Crook or the Fascist.

on the Council of Elders, on the Nyong'o-Kosgey secretariat and Maanzo a.k.a Relax.

Now, I understand that Raila's people think Kalonzo is a fool, which some of my friends think he is. Even then, did they really expect him to hand over the keys to the palace to Henry Kosgey and Anyang' Nyong'o who so obviously and publicly work for Raila?

Finally, and a thought for the Raila folk. Kalonzo is supposed to be a powerless little man, with little or no support. How did he manage to persuade Musalia and Ruto to side with him against Raila? Why did Musalia talk about ODM having a dictator? Three big shots against one, and all these people were Raila's friends not too long ago. What happened? London meeting? Uhuru's walk-out?

The fact is, as Nyachae, Saitoti, Kamotho and countless others will remeber from 1992, you shake hands with Raila at your own peril. That is the millstone around his neck, 2001 and Tosha was the culmination of naked selfishness and his ability to support the status quo at whatever cost, provided it took care of him. Now what do they say about people living in glass houses?

Finally, for all those people who are keen on aking out that Kalonzo was a oi sycophant. Apart from William Ruto, which other major Kenyan politician can claim to have stood up to Moi? So Kalonzo did not tell Moi to step down for the rigging in the 1988 elections, did Raila ask oi to step down for the rigging at Kasarani? Oh, I forgot, he organised it. Same way he organised Tuju and other losing MPs against the wishes of the wananchi. Like I was saying about glass houses and stones....

Kalonzo doesn\'t deserve this
written by Jotero , July 10, 2007
Raila was all for consensus when he was the presumed nominee. I recall Raila chastising Kalonzo for insisting on delegates. Now the situation is reversed and their positions have flip flopped. Remember Raila is the only Kenyan politician to have openly admitted he rigged elections. Please keep that in mind when accusing Kalonzo of watching Moi rig elections. Kalonzo has been treated to heckling and harassment by Raila supporters brandishing placards and hammers. One need not be very bright to conclude that those "ODM Supporters" got instructions to heckle Kalonzo along with their "nyundo" placards, and menacing hammers.

the weeping bully
written by Auntie Raila , July 10, 2007
Let's play a game. Put yourself in Kalonzo's shoes, truly a harmless man who has never wronged anyone. Now the whole year, Raila and his people have been attacking you, claiming that you went to State House to eat with Keybaki, calling you a sycophant and a coward, claiming that you are being fronted by Moi, claiming everyhting but that you are Moi's love child. And why? Simply because you will not kowtow to the boss. Mwangi, what do you mean by saying that Moi took over from Mulu Mutisya in guiding Kalonzo? How did Kalonzo rise to this sort of prominence? Moi put him here? Would Raila be anything but for his father? All politicians have someone who gave them a break, or boosted them, do you introduce Mulu Mutisya's name to slur Kalonzo?

Anyang' Nyong'o has been here before, as has Rapahel Tuju, James Orengo, David Musila, Wamalwa Kijana, Akinyi Oile, add to this list anyone who has had the temerity to say no to 'Jesus-walks'. One and all they got hammered.

Is it a coincidence that all Railla's nicknames are violent? Nyundo, Hammer, Agwambo, Tinga. Nothing there about reason, or negotiation just violence and getting things and people out of the way.
P.S, Now they are saying Ruto is eating at State House, soon they will also be talking about Musalia and Goldenberg.

Jotero,
I am writing an article on this subject now even. Raila and those defending him would do well to remember that in the LDP party, one David Musila was elected chairman, and a Joseph Kamotho was elected Secretary General. It was found convenienet however to refuse to hand the party over to them, and Prof Larry Gumbe and Mumbi Ngaru (not a professor this one) remained as the office holders.
Maybe Nyong'o and Kosgey should have closed their mouths. Then we would have thought they were neutral and would not have minded a bit. And why are they trying to bribe Maanzo with going in unopposed as Makueni ODM-K candidate, money, death threats. So very familiar.

Auntie, you could also add Shem Ochwodho, Simeon Nyachae, Joe Khamisi, George Saitoti, to the list of friends who have suffered the deadly hug of the python.

Stay with the people?
written by pndiangui , July 10, 2007
Then , it was championing for something that the Dad (Jaramogi) had a passion for. I doubt Raila would have done so post Jaramogi's death.
The real double-speak, hypocritical side of Raila become more evident after the honest old man passed on.

written by Chiefouko , July 10, 2007

Avoid pouring your emotions to a point where you forget the reason why you are a voter in the first place. Amir you become a strict Kalonzo supporter rather than agent of change our coutry realy needs. Don't get me wrong, i aint asking you not to be a Kalonzo supporter either but if below (quoted) is the reason you gonna vote, you are doing alot of us alot of harm.

"Ukweli, after the Mombasa shout-out, I will be going home in December with the express intention of voting in the way that will hurt Raila the most.

For me it is now like Le Pen vs. Chirac in France's previous election, i.e the Crook or the Fascist."

Please Note: This elections are not about Raila vs Kalonzo affair, kenyans are at stake and you have been given a chance to choose a leader that can best govern your country.

If you make it a Raila Vs Kalonzo issue you become a fanatic jus like the fans nobody wants to associate with and worst is you do your country no good.

If it ain\'t Raila, it ain\'t
written by Mbwabi Vinny , July 10, 2007
Some folks seem all determined to prevent the consummation of the greatest, epic moment in Kenya's political history, the two-way titanic battle between Kibaki and Raila. I'm still not ruling it out though.

Truth be told, trouble only brewed in ODM the moment Kalonzo's popularity started dipping. When he was leading in the doctored Steadman polls, everything seemed ok. Now that he's trailing Raila, Raila has become a punch-bag who's got to be demonized. This is crazy jealousy!

Kalonzo was not only missing in action when Raila & his colleagues were doing various tours of duty in the liberation struggle,...he infact stood in it's way, arguing against multi-partyism. The record is still young. Even more recently in Parliament, when the Bomas draft was being mutilated, Raila stood in the line of fire, his cabinet colleague, Kalonzo as usual was missing in action.

Kibaki pulled one of the greatest political master strokes in Kenya's history, not even Moi could pull one like this. I must give it to him, he effectively divided the ODM house.

Kalonzo's blatant refusal to accept Raila's soaring popularity is why he's vengefully undermining & blackmailing ODM now.

It's not about merely changing guard at State House, it's about fundamentally changing Kenya's direction. I guess Moi knew what he meant when he said,..."na mukae hivyo hivyo"... I'd rather the more experienced status quo honcho, Kibaki, than a new status quo opportunist.
