kenyan athlete dopping?Posted by Amina in Untagged |
I don't know much about the history of doping in Kenyan athletics. Anyway, I was shocked to read that one of our stellar athletes was banned because she tested for nandrolone at the National Athletics Championships. So Nandrolone is a drug whose effects(or products) include: muscle growth, appetite stimulation and increased red blood cell production and bone density. (It is used in the treatment of osteoporosis and anaemia. )
So for injecting Nandrolone she has been banned from competing for two years for Kenya by Kenyan athlete officials.
Her name is Elizabeth Muthoka and she works for Kenya Prisons (hmm?). Ms Muthoka was the country's 400m champion, and has been, as a consequence of doping, been stripped of her title. She also has to pay back the money that she won, when she broke the 400m record at the national championships. (ksh 10,000)
I am a little surprised about this. As I was writing this blog up, I googled to see if there have been other Kenyans charged with doping. Turns out that there have been. Not many, but quite a few. Susan Chepkemei was banned for a year after testing positive for Salbutamol. Simon Kemboi tested positive for anabolic steroids in 2000. Boxer David Munyasia was sent home from Athens after testing positive for miraa.
