Sexual Abuse in SchoolsPosted by Amina in Untagged |
In high school, he had sexual relations with at least one girl every year. These were always rumors, and I did not believe them. In fact, I felt sorry for the girls whose names I thought were being smeared. He was my Geography teacher.
When I was in Form Three, reality hit me. I noticed that he liked to stand next to her desk when he spoke in class. And then he would call out her name several times in class. We even teased her about it.
Generally, when a teacher gave out an assignment, whoever collected it would have to drop it off in the staffroom. So I found it strange when he asked her to drop off the class papers to his house. I don't know if she knew what she was setting herself up for. All I know is that when she got to his house, at an agreed time, he greeted her at the door with only a towel wrapped around her waist. And before you know it, they began "affair" that would last until we graduated from high school.
How inappropriate, right? You would think.
A recent study by Plan International, a development agency that works for the rights of children, concludes that sexual abuse is so prevalent in many African countries that pupils have adopted a name for it, "sexually transmitted grades,' for if these pupils ward off sexual advances from their teachers they are sure to fail their classes.
Plan International's research shows that an alarming number of children, both boys and girls (boys for corporal punishment) are dropping out of school out of fear.
An interesting term "Africell" describes girls who do not wear underwear to school so that they can sexually attract their instructors in exchange for good grades. Whatsmore, it seems these girls are encouraged by their parents! Because in some instances, if a girl sleeps with someone high up in the food chain she does not have to pay school fees, or for school supplies.
The report also tackles the issue of corporal punishment which has been discussed in these pages before.
Who will protect our children?
You can read the full report here.
Who is the adult? In this given situation?
Its the teacher right? Well then the adult should have enough sense to know that what he/she is doing is absolutely wrong from a moral stand point. I do not necessarily think that the girls (victims) submit to the sexual encounter with their teaches for favors or whatever gains they may benefit from. This teachers use lies to entice these children into sex, and by preying on the naivety of their innocence that is exactly what makes this an ABUSE.
Its for this reason alone that Mary Kay Letourneau served more than seven years in prison for "raping" Vili Fualaau-one of her sixth-grade students (13 years Old). It was considered RAPE even though the little boy consented to have sex with her, explaining that they were IN LOVE.
Anyway she got pregnant prior to be jailed, then was pregnant again while still in prison with Vili Fualaau's babies...lol!! Well they ended up getting married when she got out of prison but thats beside the point.
Point is here in the U.S. The law is the law, even though the two were "IN LOVE" she was blamed because she was the ADULT and should have reasoned differently from the little boy she had sex with. Unfortunately this issues will plague 3rd world countries for eternity because I dont think anyone cares enough to stand up against the abuse and make changes.
